Straight from the Volkswagen's booth at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is this: The BUDD-e Concept. Showing off VW's new MEB electric platform, the BUDD-e offers up a glimpse of next-generation connectivity and infotainment concepts. It's the first VW based on the new Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB) and features a 101 kWh battery that enables up to an estimated 373 miles of range on the New European Drive Cycle, or an EPA-drive-cycle-estimated 233 miles of range.

Exterior highlights on the BUDD-e concept include 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a narrow LED stripe that runs all the way around the car, and a front end design that is unmistakably Volkswagen. You won't find door handles or wing mirrors on this concept, as Volkswagen has replaced these with electronic variants. At the rear is a small, retractable compartment called a Drop Box. VW expects this storage area to become something akin to a mobile mailbox where parcel delivery services can use a digital key to leave packages.Â

Inside, things get even more futuristic. Two separate displays show off the BUDD-e's human-machine interface functionality. First is the Active Info Display in the traditional front-of-driver location that provides conceptual focus on drive information. Second is a head unit that gives infotainment needs to all passengers on board. All of these systems use gesture control, touchscreen, or voice control to navigate the various options. Volkswagen has also redefined what a multifunction steering wheel means with their new 3.0 version. This steering wheel has no switches and operates via haptic feedback on its smooth surfaces. You can active by pressure or a swipe gesture to navigate the info screens.
